About this University

The University of Gloucestershire has its students at the heart of everything that it does. It is home to 12,000 students and has three campuses across Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The University sits within the top 25 for course satisfaction in the UK, according to the Guardian 2020. It is also ranked 3rd globally for personal tutor support and 7th globally for quality of lectures according to the recent International Student Barometer results in 2021.

The university offers a vast array of programmes for students to choose from across its seven schools, including sandwich courses offering a year in industry and fast-track undergraduate degrees. There are also options to complete final year undergraduate study via a range of level six top up degrees, and also complete a postgraduate master’s course via a master’s degree stage award.

The University of Gloucestershire considers all types of qualifications, and students can apply to enter at various points during the degree programme so long as they have enough credit from an approved course in the same field.

Outside of classrooms, students can take part in outdoor sports such as skiing, mountain climbing, water sports, and much more through participation in the numerous student clubs and societies. Students are well represented with the student union acting as the voice of the student body and supports the student community.

The Growth Hub based at Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester is a collaboration between the university and Gloucestershire Local Enterprise Partnership that supports numerous regional high-growth businesses. Recently, the university also supported the opening of a Growth Hub in Indonesia.

The university enjoys links with international leading employers such as Kodak, Google, BAFTA and BBC TV and Radio, to name just a few.

Graduate outcomes

The university provides career services to students by providing support, information and opportunities to gain work experience, develop their skills and manage their career. According to the most recent Graduate Outcomes Survey, 92 per cent of Gloucestershire graduates are in employment or further study within 15 months of completing their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey published June 2021 based on 2018/19 leavers).

Placements

Most of the courses include placement modules which allow students to gain relevant experience working in a professional environment, locally, nationally, or internationally. In any one year, there are typically over 4,000 placements.

Internships

The university’s internship programme is open to all students on every course and offers them the chance to grow in confidence, as well as discover and develop their skills, with support from a dedicated team from start to finish.

Volunteering

There are a wealth of volunteering opportunities for students. A recent survey of the UK’s leading businesses found 75 per cent of employers prefer to recruit people with volunteering experience.

Career management

The university’s team of professional careers advisers offer sessions within chosen academic programmes, as well as one-to-one advice, guidance and information to help students decide on what career they want to pursue after graduation.

Students are encouraged to explore their potential and career ideas, develop their skills and prepare with confidence for the next step after graduation.

Paid work

The Students’ Union advertises part-time paid work via its JobShop, which students can fit around their studies.

Student ambassadors

Students can become student ambassadors and be paid to represent the university in a variety of ways, from supporting open events to working with the international team delivering tours to overseas guests and supporting marketing campaigns.

What's new

In March 2021, University of Gloucestershire announced it had bought Gloucester’s Debenhams building. The aim: to enable its ambitious plans for growth and to work with partners to create a new future for Gloucester city centre.

This iconic building will be brought back to life as a vibrant City Campus – a modern centre for teaching, learning and community partnerships.

Many of the university’s courses are crucial to the health, quality of life and economic success of our region, including Nursing and Education. The new city campus will provide facilities to train these professionals, providing new opportunities for the people who live here, but also attracting new talent to come and study in the region

International Student Barometer Results

The university’s work is recognized globally and recently the institution took part in the annual International Student Barometer (ISB) in 2021/22, along with over 100 Universities around the world. The ISB has been in place for over ten years and is the only survey that specifically targets international student experience. Highlights include:

Scholarships & funding

The University of Gloucestershire rewards academic excellence and operates an extensive scholarship programme for international students. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be full-time and paying fees at the international tuition fee rate.

The university offers a range of automatic grant awards from GBP 2,000 for undergraduate or postgraduate taught courses. These will be awarded after receipt of application and offer. The awards are valid for the first year of study only.

The university also recognises academic excellence with 50 per cent postgraduate merit scholarships for select students in the following schools:

Eligibility

Entry requirements

To meet the University of Gloucestershire’s English language entry requirements, international students will need to achieve scores in tests including IELTS, however the university also accepts alternative English language tests. In addition, the university offers an English Language Test to applicants who apply to Gloucestershire:

IELTS

  • Most bachelor’s degree courses (Level 4, 5 and 6 entry) – 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band.
  • Journalism BA and MA, Sports Therapy BA and MA, Physiotherapy BA and Nursing courses BSc – 7.0 overall with no less than 7.0 in any component.
  • Postgraduate courses – 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component
  • Postgraduate Research courses – 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in writing and no less than 5.5 in any other component.

Pre-Sessional English courses

The university offers online pre-sessional courses to help students achieve the required English level for undergraduate or postgraduate study. The courses are available as a six-week or ten-week course and take place in the summer prior to starting the academic course.

Our international research expertise continues to grow, which has a direct impact on reputation and global reach, and the quality of teaching at Gloucestershire: 47% of our research was rated “World Leading or Internationally Excellent” in the latest REF process. We also doubled the number of subject areas included - from 6 to 13 in compared to the last major UK review in 2014.

Business School​

The Business School at Oxstalls Campus, Gloucester, is home to an expanded Growth Hub. From a moot court room to a live Thomson Reuters trading room, the building allows students to learn in a professional environment using the latest techniques and equipment found in company headquarters around the globe. Students also benefit from live projects with real companies, academics from industry backgrounds and opportunities to take work experience or placements as part of their course.

School of Arts

As a creative community with great heritage, the School of Arts is preparing you for this new landscape through the provision of education, knowledge and choices. We’re opening up an entire world that takes you on a journey, whether this is towards further study or working in a national or international sphere.

As a student you’ll be empowered, challenged, developed. You’ll discover your voice. Everyone wants to employ people who can think. Our students are taught how to do this – but also to think differently – and we give you the confidence to bring all this talent out into the world.

The Design Centre, at Park Campus in Cheltenham, offers a professional space for advertising, fashion, graphics, interior and product design students to develop their creative talent. Students can take a virtual tour of the facility.

The Francis Close Hall Campus has dedicated Illustration and landscape architecture open-plan studios, photography and fine art studios.

School of Computing and Engineering

Develop and design innovative projects using state-of-the-art equipment in our purpose-built Computing and Technology suite.

The degrees we offer range from the highly technical, to the creative, to the business oriented. Whatever the choice of degree, you will develop excellent broad-base technical and problem-solving skills that will stand you in good stead in any future career.

School of Creative Industries

The School of Creative Industries offers industry-standard, specialist facilities at the Park campus in Cheltenham. The studios and production spaces at the university form an interdisciplinary hub for students to commission, collaborate and create exciting work together. The expanded and updated Media Centre is equipped with specialist equipment. Students can work together on projects in industry-standard production spaces including:

School of Education and Humanities

School of Health and Social Care

Our health and social care students have access to the latest equipment, facilities and placements to bring learning to life and make confident practicing professionals.

School of Natural, social and Sport Sciences

From looking inside the mind with virtual reality and EEG equipment, to examining African snails and venus flytraps, our fully-equipped and dedicated labs provide you with the perfect research centre. We also have a dedicated forensic interview suite and mock crime scene house for you to test your skills in gathering and examining evidence.​ Put your learning into practice in our professional-standard sports therapy clinics and our state-of-the-art sport and exercise science laboratories.​

All of our courses have a strong practical element, whether through volunteering and internships, research or field trips and fieldwork. Some courses also offer the opportunity to take on research projects with, or for, external organisations, while others focus on developing your practical experience by providing a wide range of volunteering opportunities in which you can put your skills to the test.
